Master Program in Heritage Conservation at the TU Berlin (MSD)
Due to the growing complexity in the field of Historic Preservation, no single
standard degree program can convey the skills and know-how necessary for a
responsible contribution in this area.
The interdisciplinary Master program in Heritage Conservation builds on
knowledge from various subjects while providing specific qualification in
heritage conservation. With a strong link to practice along with
interdisciplinary project work, students become prepared to enter real-world
careers in this multi-facetted profession.
The focus of the program is an annual alterning project during the first two
semesters which is closely supervised. Working on a historic building from the
Berlin-Brandenburg region, students will learn the scientific and practical
methods for coping with the issues of heritage management. This takes place in
the form of integrated coursework (for example, for the following classes:
Building Surveying and Building Archaeology, Inventarisation, Archive Research,
Damage Assessment, Restoration Planning, Presentation and Publication). There
are also a variety of additional classes available in the areas of the History
of Art and Architecture as well as Restoration and Conservation. Practical
relevance is ensured by teaching staff from outside the university employed in
various areas, including regional heritage conservation authorities,
architectural firms, restoration firms, etc. Along with an emphasis on teaching
practical skills, the program also places a strong focus on research, especially
research involving a “close-reading” of the building where students learn to
read the built structure itself as a historical source. Hence, the program is
also recommended for applicants interested in a career in science and research.
